ANNOUNCEMENT - 18 JUNE 2019
TERRY WESLEY 1935 - 2019
Terry Wesley 1 Feb 1935 - 18 Nov 2019
Terry was a member of Macclesfield Wheelers from the early 1950s, joining from the Macclesfield Coureurs, which was associated to the British League of Racing Cyclists (BLRC). The BLRC catered for ‘massed start’ road races at a time when other organisations forbade these. Terry joined the Wheelers when the club associated to the BLRC.
Terry’s National Service took him to Suez in 1953 where he thoroughly enjoyed the life, taking a number of wins for the RAF’s Exiles Cycling Club. He continued to keep in touch with Exiles for the rest of his life.
After Terry joined the Wheelers, and until the mid-1960s, the club had a formidable team of 1st Category riders, (we’d probably now call them Elite). Barry Jackson and then Barry Lawton were selected to ride the Milk Race, but Terry was a core member of a team that succeeded in many events.
In that same period, Terry was an enthusiastic race organiser. Many years later, in addition to running a very busy gas appliance sales business, he generously contributed a great deal of time and energy providing national and international race service.
He resumed race organising in the 1990s, and delighted in organising trips abroad such as the Wheelers 1998 visit to Eire for the Grand Depart of the Tour de France from Dublin. He followed this up with organising a World Tour for himself, his wife Nora (who died in 2011) and Roy Lawton.
Terry’s outstanding contributions to the Wheelers included terms (invariably multiple terms) as Road Race Secretary, Time Trial Secretary, Sub-Captain, Press Co-ordinator, President, Secretary, Social Secretary, Sunday Runs Captain and Cycle Rights Officer. In recognition of service to the Wheelers in these roles and his tireless other committee work, the club made him a life member, one of only 24 members that it has honoured in this way.
