Lark Ride to Chapel 4 Aug

10 riders feasted like kings (er and queens) at the delightful No Car Café last Saturday.

After descending Standing Stone on our way home we were honoured to glimpse a sizeable contingent of riders from the 1.00 pm faster group heading doggedly upwards, making it two weeks in a row that we have met another Wheelers ride coming the other way. I dream of the day when this will be a common occurrence, with groups of Wheelers criss-crossing each other all over Cheshire, and cheering children as eager to add us to their tally as they do so now with Eddie Stobart lorries.

My average speed: 12.5 mph.

Lark Ride to Tittesworth 11 Aug

9.00 am South Park car park. 46 local miles, 3,500 feet of climbing. Nothing too strenuous so we have something left for the 70th Anniversary Club Run on Sunday. Route tweaked to avoid 25% climb in Rushton, following welcome tip off from a native. I might be mad but I'm not stupid.

Lark Ride to Norley 18 Aug

Brilliant ride yesterday, which I really enjoyed. Charming café at Stonyford Cottage Gardens & Garden Centre (soya milk available), where we were the sole patrons. 16 riders, not all at the same time, although by a bit of serendipity Dave W joined us at the very junction in Byley where Steve P left us. Good to have (newly married) Elliot S and (to be married) Matt R out with us again, together with a re-engineered David Hi demonstrating that, moan if we dare about the NHS, it has clearly spared no expense in implanting the best turbocharger that money can buy into the legs of the club’s legendary own Bionic Man.

Other legends making my ride today were Phil B, Russell H, Simon G, Mark Boo, Simon R, Mike C, welcome back to week two to Mike’s chum Bennett, Vikki Ironperson, Andrew R and Janet H. Great to have such a big turnout, and to go a little faster than usual, for we fairly flew along. My average speed for the 60 miles from park to home: 15.8 mph.

Lark Ride to Tissington 25 Aug

Fabulous ride yesterday in some beautiful, and new to me, countryside crossing the Manifold Valley and through Milldale and Alstonefield with the odd shower and even odder puncture or four (well at least it was an even number).

13 riders. My companions were Russell H, Janet H, Mark Boo, Rob S, Carl, Vikki M, Mike C, Tom G, Phil B, Oliver J, Steve P and welcome to Vikki’s fellow Ironperson Jackie. My average speed 11.6 mph.

Lark Ride to Eaton 1 Sept

Welcome to three Lark Ride debutants today: Lynda, Lucia and Kev, joining regulars Mike, Mark, Andrew, Janet, Simon G, Russell, Steve, John B, Phil and me. We switched the start of the route to cruise along the closed Cong Road, enjoying the rare treat of no cars coming the other way. Made it to the nice, new and spotless Drays Coffee Shop at Eaton at an average of 17.0 mph where we were joined by the redoubtable Paul R, who rode brilliantly with us all the way back. So 14 riders in all, back in Macc for 2.00 pm, my average speed 16.6 mph. Brilliant.

Lark Ride to Wheelock Hall 8 Sept

That ride in numbers. Riders, six: Steve P, Becky H, Graham T, Mark Boo, Phil B, me. Lark Ride debutantes, two: Becky and Graham (welcome). Extra loop before café as it was only 11.25 and not raining much, one. Other customers in the cafe when we got there, zero. Pet rabbits in bespoke café annex, three. Sausages with debutantes’ oatcake order, zero. Sausages arriving later, four. Other Wheelers arriving as we left, one brace. Broken spoke, one (Graham). Puncture, one (me). Total miles, South Park to South Park 50. Ride leader misleadingly implying that he returned to South Park, one. Average speed of ride leader, South Park to Ride Leader HQ, 14.7 mph. Ride leader’s cycling kit straight into washing machine, all. OK even I know that’s not a number, even if number of times ride leader failed Maths O Level, two.

Lark Ride to Longnor 15 Sept

Ten Larks out on our 9.00 am 42 mile ride yesterday to my favourite café, the Longnor Craft Centre & Coffee Shop (vegans please note: soya milk available). We were: David H, Russell H, Tim P, Mark Boo, Andrew R, Simon R, new member Bennet G, Dave L, Phil B and me.

In a serendipitous piece of synchronicity, some of us were descending Buxton Old Road (potentially the venue for an exciting new open hill climb in May being organised by new member Bhima B) at the end of our ride, just as the 1.00 pm Sat Club Run was climbing it.

My average speed, park to home: 11.7 mph. Fabulous scenery everywhere and some new-to-most-of-us lanes north of Brund. Where’s Brund? Well, you’ll just have to come out with us next time to find out....

My average speed 12.4 mph. Loved it, every minute of it.

Lark Ride to Congleton today 9.00 am

Amended route following overnight amends from our Risk Team (one of my planned return leg climbs was actually less amusing than I thought).
