Saturday Social Ride

Postby Brian Evans » Tue Sep 22, 2015 8:50 am

A new ride, inspired by "just a ride", but on a Saturday, a bit slower, shorter and starting off monthy. First ride 3rd October. Meet from 9.30am, ready to ride at 10.00am. We will start and finish at Paul (Ride and Repair's) workshop, just off Byrons / Gunco Lane. THIS IS A NEW START POINT, JUST FOR THIS RIDE. See the map linked on the club runs list. Tea and cakes at the end.
All types of (roadworthy) bikes welcome, but expensive carbon featherweights probably best left at home. Mainly a road ride, with sections of cyclepath, canal towpath and tracks. Members and prospective members all welcome. Younger riders welcome, but if you are under 16 you must bring along a responsible adult. Up to 20 miles, at a relaxed speed. Back for 12.00.
If you haven't ridden with us before, then please turn up at 9.30am.

Yes indeed. Looking forward to hosting a new ride.

There is plenty of free parking at the workshop as well as a lounge area, toilets and changing facilities in the workshop itself.
The coffee machine and kettle will be on and, as Brian says, there will be cakes and biscuits at the end of the ride too.

This should be a perfect introduction for new riders or those considering joining the club, as well as a gentle warm up for the afternoon rides.
The pace and the route will be very sociable.

See you there.

Eight out this morning, for a very social, leisurely paced ride round some of the lanes and tracks of south Macclesfield. Nice mix of newer and older members enjoying tea, coffee, doughnuts and muffins as a reward at the end. Thanks to Paul for hosting us. Vital ride statistics: 1 cow herded into field, 1 bullock shoed off track, no punctures, no one fell in the canal (bit of a close call though), 4 teas, 4 coffees, 1 large pack of mini chocolate muffins, 1 six pack of large jam doughnuts, and 4 chocolate muffins scoffed at the end. Miles, not really sure, could probably count them on my fingers and toes. A very pleasant way to spend Saturday morning though.

Next Ride => Saturday 7th November. Do join us.

Hearing the rain beating against the windows, seeing the water streaming down the road, little did I expect anyone to turn out for our Saturday Social Ride. But, how wrong can you be. Five of us enjoyed a quiet route along the backroads up to Higher Poynton returning via the Middlewood way. Our contingent included two first timers, both coming from afar. Jason from Alderely Edge and Dave from Buxton. We will be pleased to see you all again on the next Saturday Social, or one of the clubs many other rides.

Thanks for Paul for a great route, and comfy chairs and refreshments at the end of the ride! :thumleft:

A quick word on the routes we use. One or two people have said they might feel less comfortable about using tracks. We do use some stretches, partly to get away from busy roads, partly for variety, and partly cos some of them are quite scenic. We don't use anything technical, what we use is more like cycle paths or solid farm tracks. We do test the routes before we use them, and will only use stuff suitable for road bikes. You may find slightly wider tyres (not skinny racing tyres) more comfortable, but mountain bikes are definitely not needed. And we are very happy for people to walk the odd stretch if wished.

Next ride will be in early December. Watch this space for confirmation of date.

Four enjoyed a leisurely ride round the lanes and some easy tracks south of Macclesfield. Enjoying an unusual morning of sunshine, finishing off with tea, coffee and biscuits at Pauls workshop. A couple of new tracks for some, taking in Tidnock Lane and the tarmacked track through the Parkland at North Rode. Welcome to Richard (who frequents the Sunday rides) and prospective member Bill, out for his first ride with the club.

We aim to make this one of the slowest, shortest rides the club does. We will tweak the routes to suit the riders and their bikes on the day. If you would like to saunter round the lanes, explore a few places you may not have noticed before, then do join us on our next Saturday Social on 3 September.

Despite the somewhat soggy conditions, 10 of us enjoyed a leisurely ride on Saturday morning. A steady ascent up past the Ryles Arms, followed by a whizz own to the A54 to Bosley cross roads, and then a few meandering lanes to round off. Just checking out part of Tuesday's route, make sure those Tour of Britain riders will be able to handle it! Plenty of nicely painted bikes about, attached to road signs, up lampposts etc.

Our next Saturday Social ride will be early October, watch this space for the date. Then we will move into a more ad-hoc, weather dependent mode over winter.
