Eventful Easy ride to Dunham

Postby Katherine Jackson » Sun Jan 11, 2015 5:07 pm

13 Easy riders cycled against a cold wind to Dunham today. We split into two groups at Buckley Hill since Alison had not been out with us since October, Martin took the larger group on a longer route. John had a catastrophic failure of his bottom bracket on his 'fixie' bike. It started failing near Rostherne, so he took the shorter route. It failed altogether several miles before the cafe, so he took off his chain and I towed him as he hung on to the back of my saddle. A spare bottom bracket is one of the few things that Martin and John do not carry around! We still managed to get to the cafe before the rest arrived. The main group covered 28 miles, at a slower than usual 11mph (combination of the wind and John's failing bottom bracket before the group split).

The top unit is the replacement the rest is what I removed from the bike. No disassembly of the sealed unit required. I have never seen one disintegrate so quickly

Yes children. That's what bottom brackets used to look like before PF92, BB30, external cups and octalink. Those were the days . . .. . .

And there were even bottom brackets before Shimano sealed units where you had to put the bearings into the cups yourself and adjust the loading on the bearings by hand
