Saturday Club Runs

Postby mochit » Thu Oct 23, 2014 9:10 pm

I expect everyone knows the clocks change this Saturday! so after many years of riding back from the cafe stop in the dark and spooky Cheshire lanes, propose we have an earlier start time during the winter, like we do when we go to Grindleford? let's discuss at Cheddleton cafe this Saturday...... :afro:

Maybe we could just try starting at 13:00 for a change!

Some of us have to leave home an hour before the start already. And some of us enjoy riding in the dark.

I much prefer riding in daylight, so would definitely be in favour of an earlier start during the winter.

The start time of 1pm for the Saturday club run suits most riders as far as I understand.
Also, many riders go to the pub after the standard club ride. It would not suit them to arrive earlier.

However, there's been recent talk of a separate Saturday club ride, starting mid morning, which is looking for a committed organiser to arrange.

So step up and be counted!

I don't particularly like riding in the dark but its probably inevitable for a few weeks in the winter. Judging by the numbers that turn up 1pm is a popular start time. It would be good to get off at 1 tho, rather than 1.15 or1.20. Simon sets a very good example, he's always the first, or one of the first at the fermain and he's a lot longer ride there than most. I think its the new ride leaders call.

I think you're missing the point, this isn't about creating a separate ride, it's about adapting the existing club run. Nobody needs to "step up and be counted", it's an idea for discussion and if the majority decide to keep the 13:00 start time then it will remain.
As far as I know the majority of people that turn up on a Saturday don't go to the pub.

I vote for an earlier start, say noon. This would:
- be safer (riding in the dark must be significantly more risky than in the light, even with modern lights)
- be more pleasant (I'd rather see the countryside)
- less likely to put off new members (or those without lights) from attending

I dont think it should start any earlier as its good to be able to get something (eg DIY) achieved in the morning.

OK, I won't get one then. Phew, that's saved some money.

Actually, as a fully paid-up member of the Ridiculous Squad, I find a helmet-mounted light useful at junctions, roundabouts, etc as I've trained my head to swivel towards oncoming traffic, a trick that my bar-mounted lights have not yet mastered.

Helmet mounted lights pretty useful when you puncture in the dark as well.
