saturday ride 21st june

Postby andyjak » Mon Jun 02, 2014 9:32 pm

I notice that the saturday ride for 21st of June is as yet TBA... perhaps we could go over to Bakewell for L'eroica weekend? looks like it could be an interesting event. Any wheelers entered?

Usual route to the top of Crowdicote, left at the High Peak Trail before the A525, over to Chelmorton. A5270 / A6 to Wyedale and into Bakewell on the Monsal Trail.

A good 60km and hilly with it. Even 'direct' through Monyash would be 50km.

Might need an earlier start.

I was seriously considering entering until I saw the £70 entry fee which I think is outrageous. I'm trying to get my old racing bike back together. How I was going to do it on a bottom gear of 42x20 I'm not sure! I'm up for a ride over though I think the main event is on the Sunday.

Re: Saturday's ride to l'Eroica cycling festival at Bakewell. To make the most of the day, I am proposing that setting off early is the best option - say 10.00 or 11.00? I find that, when I've cycled to Bakewell in the past, The Cat, Harpur Hill, Brierlow Bar, Chelmorton, along the 'top road' past Magpie Mine then left on the Monyash/Bakewell Rd dropping into the town past the church...which has a cafe open until 3.00 - quite cheap too (!) is my preferred route - approx 48km, 2hrs or so. Anybody got any thoughts on this? A couple of hours can then be spent having a mooch around the event, it is the 'longest day' after all!

Don't fancy our own little Eroica along the Monsal Trail then ?

But an early start is a good plan - 11am should be plenty early enough.

Mr P Hart has kindly offered to lead a group out at 11 am to allow time for "a proper ride" (his words not mine) and for admiring the rusty steeds and wolly jumpers assembled in Bakewell. Something to look forward to, I'll be there for 11.

Re: "A proper ride"...It would be great if some of our more naturally gifted members were to lead out a 'proper ride' by putting a number on their back on tuesday and try to stop Congleton beating us in the inter-club 25! Rides don't get any more proper than ' the race of truth!' Any takers?

BTDT in 2008. Wasn't much fun.

So a pleasant even paced ride over to Bakewell on the AJ route for the rest of us then ?
