Lights

Postby admin » Sun Oct 14, 2012 4:54 pm

All Saturday club runs require lights from 20 October. All evening rides need lights from now.
As the rear rider in a group yours is the first rear light a car will see especially on winding roads. All riders must have lights of sufficient brightness and visibility. Therefore, the use of "backup LED lights" will not be permitted as a suitable rear light.
As the advertising blurb states "Red LED Light is a tiny backup rear light which is bright enough to get you home. Mounts easily onto your Seatpost using the elastic cord supplied". These light are intended to get you home if the light conditions deteriorate due to the weather or you are delayed by a puncture.

3 or more LEDS or large bright LED. Typically using AAA or AA batteries

Lights should be positioned so they are not obscured by bags or clothing.

Some riders have very bright lights which may dazzle riders in the group. To reduce the dazzle the very bright lights should be angled so they do not shine into riders eyes or run in a suitable flash mode.
Suitable front lights are required.
Riders without suitable lights will either be asked to leave the ride early or not permitted on the ride. Ride leaders decision is final!!
Remember be seen be safe.

Interesting excerpt from the CTC Forum in the new issue of CYCLE.

Debating the visibility/ ability to judge distance of cyclists rear lights.

There appears to be a concensus that best is one (or more) flashing to attract attention and one (or more) constant to enable the viewer to get a better impression of how far ahead the cyclists is.
