Pantani in the Park Tavern

Postby Brain » Thu Jul 03, 2014 10:33 am

To coincide with this years Tour de France, on Friday 25th July I have arranged for an evening in the Park Tavern, Park lane, Macclesfield.
We will have exclusive use of the Taverns' cinema room for a private screening of Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist (2014)

In 1998 Marco Pantani, the most flamboyant and popular cyclist of his era, won both the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, a titanic feat of physical and mental endurance that no rider has repeated since. He was a hero to millions, the saviour of cycling following the doping scandals which threatened to destroy the sport. However, less than six years later, aged just 34, he died alone, in a cheap hotel room, from acute cocaine poisoning. He had been an addict for five years. This is the story of the tragic battles fought by the most important Italian cyclist of his generation; man verses mountain, athlete verses addiction, Marco Pantani verses himself

All are welcome, there is no charge for the event so please come along and enjoy some of the excellent beers on offer. The room seats around 30 and there's no booking so arrive early. Planned screening time is 8 pm with a half time interval to recharge glasses!
If you're on a bike there is a private yard to the rear of the pub
It would be useful to know anticipated numbers, so let me know if you're up for it,
Cheers

Just a reminder if you would like to watch the Pantani film it's showing this Friday eve in the Park Lane Tavern

With Nibali looking favourite for this years Tour de France, will it be the first Italian victory since Pantani himself ?

Cheers and see you Friday

Brian

Thanks for organising. Good evening even if I ended up looking like I was in a wet T shirt competition (it was quite hot in the room). You might enjoy the following on the Hinault - Lemond rivalry

A big thanks to all who came along,
I hope everyone enjoyed the evening, yes Dave I think we had the hottest evening of the year, good for sales of refreshments! and thanks for the link "slaying the Badger" (Hinault vs Lemond), superb film.
The manager of the Tavern was really pleased with the success of the evening and more than happy for repeat performances,
with this in mind, how about making it a regular feature? perhaps an evening a month throughout the winter season ?
If so has anyone any suggestions of titles that may be of interest (cycling related I guess!)
Let me know if there's an interest and I'd be happy to arrange it
Cheers

A winter series of films is a great idea my first choice for a film is
Breaking Away (1979) The first cycling film I saw .Set in small town America , teenager dreams of being a pro cyclist ,( pre Armstrong) when no ones interested in cycling
But a team from Italy does come over to ride the local race, will it end in tears ?
It's actually a pretty good film

I'm happy to watch non cycling films too

If you missed it last Friady, it's now on YouTube (but obviously lower quality)

Suggestions for other cycling films:

- A Sunday in Hell (about Paris Roubaix)

- The Final Hour (Chris Boardman's final attempt on the hour record)

- The High Life (documentary about Robert Millar)

- Overcoming (follows CSC during a season with truly wonderful scene where Riis knocks Julich off his bike)

Pantani case reopened. Was he murdered as the family have claimed?
