New Helmet Reqd

Postby dharbott » Mon Oct 13, 2008 8:49 am

After a crash on Saturday I've just had to buy a new helmet.
The old one was quite old, and worked very well, despite taking a heavy hit onto tarmac.

Anyway, reading the manual that came with the new helmet it recommends that a helmet is replaced every 3 years!

I think the important thing is to examine your helmet regularly and take heed of any obvious cracks in the outer skin and/ or evidence of the foam expanded 'styrene deteriorating within.
A nasty face plant six years ago proved my then eight year old 'Bell' was still worthy.

AKA Mr Grub Street - whatever that implies!

I suspect its helmet manufactures wanting to protect themselves from legal action against claims of potential helmet failure due to age. Also, more cynically, it serves to sell more helmets...
