The passing of Paul Newton

Postby david.haley » Mon Dec 19, 2016 7:56 pm

It is with much regret that I am reporting that former Macc wheeler, Paul Newton, sadly passed away on 18/12/16. Paul was prominent in the Wheelers during 70's and 80's, he specialised in longer distance time trials completing several 12 and 24 hour events. I remember vividly the Mersey Roads 24 hour event in 1984 when I supported him in an event where other competitors were a certain John Jackson and a youthful Brian Renshaw. I am so grateful to Paul for being the person who introduced to the joys of our cycling sport. There will be a number of other Wheelers who remember Paul and they are probably aware that he had fought bravely against cancer for the last couple of years. Let me express my admiration for his positive and high spirited company that never wavered even in the most difficult circumstances.

Really sorry to hear of Paul's death, Dave, yet I cannot comprehend the physical and mental agony which he has suffered. You have my admiration for being so supportive to Paul, and to others, who we have 'lost' in recent years. Mike

So sorry to hear about Paul, I wasn't aware he was poorly. I was only looking at some photos from the 1984 Mersey 24 this morning and have a couple of him in full flight. Thursday nights playing cards with him at the Oxford were always a treat.
